Want to Improve Emotional Intelligence? This Simple Trick Actually Works | Inc.com

It’s called the Laundry Basket Rule, and it’s a heck of a shortcut.

But a reader recently reminded me of a brilliantly simple way to explain the whole strategy — something I’ve written about before in a different context, without even realizing how apt it was.

Maybe we should explain the problem first, so the simple solution will make the most sense. It goes like this. Defining emotional intelligence can be complex, but practically speaking, it’s often about shaping communication so as to avoid emotional pitfalls that distract from your goals.

The challenge? So many words and phrases have ancillary meanings that we don’t even think about. Sometimes they’re the exact opposite of the things we intend.

Cracking the Case of London’s Elusive, Acrobatic Rare-Book Thieves | Vanity Fair

Illustrations by Shawn Martinbrough; Coloring by Christopher Sotomayor.

“Impossible,” said David Ward. The London Metropolitan Police constable looked up.

Some 50 feet above him, he saw that someone had carved a gaping hole through a skylight. Standing in the Frontier Forwarding warehouse in Feltham, West London, he could hear the howl of jets from neighboring Heathrow Airport as they roared overhead.

At Ward’s feet lay three open trunks, heavy-duty steel cases. They were empty. A few books lay strewn about. Those trunks had previously been full of books. Not just any books. The missing ones, 240 in all, included early versions of some of the most significant printed works of European history.

The Man Behind the Hemingway Myth – WSJ

A new PBS documentary offers a fresh look at a great and tragic writer who disappeared into a self-created macho stereotype

From article…

Early next month, timed to the sixtieth anniversary of Ernest Hemingway’s death, PBS will air Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s long-awaited three-part, six-hour look at this most iconic of iconic American writers.

In a culture where screens have beat out paper and ink as the medium for gathering information and in so doing have turned us into scanners with atrophied attention spans, it’s something of an irony that it would take the visual experience of a documentary—full of stunning archival photos and deft commentary by the likes of Edna O’Brien and Tobias Wolff—to inspire a return to the page to experience the work of the writer who, as Mr. Wolff puts it, “changed all the furniture in the room.”

Full worm moon will rise Sunday evening; but is it a supermoon?

By Doyle Rice, USA TODAY

The moon will look most spectacular just as it appears above the eastern horizon early Sunday evening.

Other names for this month’s full moon include the crow, crust, sap, and sugar moon.

By some definitions, it’s a supermoon, meaning that it’s a bit closer to the Earth than during an average full moon.

Get ready for the full “worm” moon, which will rise Sunday evening, March 28, in the eastern sky.The name likely refers to the earthworms that appear in the soil as the weather gets warmer, inviting hungry birds to feed on them.
