Sunburns, poor acoustics, craning to see around someone’s too high lawn chair – outdoor concert season in the PNW is a unique slice of summer. With our place in music history secured thanks to early grunge, various venues across Seattle offering live music year-round, and with summer concerts taking our musical enjoyment to an 11, it’s hard not to have bands on the brain. Enjoy some fiction to help you lean into the music a little more. Are you ready to rock ‘n’ read? 

We begin in Egypt in the early 2000’s with Red Like Orange by Shārl ʻAql, a.k.a. Charles Akl. Local moves to Cairo after a breakup, where he finds a new roommate and an old accordion. The two decide to take up instruments and become musicians, despite no actual musical experience, and their world unexpectedly expands as they find themselves in new music circles, chasing success and wondering what it means to “make it” in music and in life.  

 The Whyte Python World Tour by Travis Kennedy takes us on a wild ride when the CIA maneuvers the world-famous metal band Whyte Python to infiltrate the Iron Curtain in a PsyOp code named ‘Operation: Facemelt’. Full of misfit characters, soviet spies, and 80’s nostalgia, this novel is part thriller, part romp. 

For the 1970’s, we have Walk Softly on This Heart of Mine by Callie Collins, a novel about married Texas bar owners who invite a young and upcoming blues musician to stay for the summer in the hopes it will save their struggling honky-tonk. What follows is a journey of yearning, identity, music, and belonging. 

In the late 1960’s, Utopia Avenue by David Mitchell is a tale of a London psychedelic-folk band’s swift rise to fame, but Mitchell puts his unique stamp on the storytelling with subtle references to characters in his greater literary universe, cameos of 60’s musical luminaries, and chapter titles that are the actual songs created by the eponymous band.

Set in a changing 1950’s San Francisco, On the Rooftop by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton follows the jazz girl group ‘The Sensations’ as they grow from young girls to women with their own dreams, dreams separate from those of their mother who has pushed them towards stardom and success their whole lives.  

Lastly, in Mitch Albiom’s The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto, enigmatic guitarist Frankie Presto, born during the Spanish Civil War and sent to America at age 9, creates enchanting music and literally changes lives with his magic strings. His journey of heartbreak, music, betrayal, and love, is narrated by Music itself, with cameos throughout of music icons of the 20th century, from Django to Tony Bennett to Carole King.

If none of these genres were quite your groove there are plenty more books that feature musicians and bands, from rom coms to thrillers to fantasy. Or maybe you’ll skip the books and go straight to the source, the music – wander the CD collections or check out our streaming services. The beat and the books go on at the library!

Blue Origin wins $700 million contract to build NASA’s next Mars orbiter

Blue Origin will build NASA’s next Mars orbiter.

The agency announced on Tuesday (Sept. 1) that it has selected Jeff Bezos‘ spaceflight company to develop the $700 million Mars Telecommunications Network (MTN), which is expected to be up and running at the Red Planet by 2030.

“The award marks a milestone in NASA’s strategy to expand communications and navigation services beyond Earth and the moon, establishing the foundation for sustained exploration of Mars in the coming decades,” NASA officials said in a statement on Tuesday.

As its name suggests, the MTN — previously known as the Mars Telecommunications Orbiter — will primarily serve to aid NASA science missions rather than gather data of its own.

The MTN is “a next-generation communications system that will enable reliable, high-bandwidth communications and navigation services for current and future Mars missions,” NASA officials said in the statement.

The need for such a data-relay craft is expected to become acute in the coming years as NASA’s fleet of current Mars orbiters ages and the agency works to prepare the Red Planet ground for crewed missions in the late 2030s or early 2040s.

At the moment, just two NASA orbiters relay data and commands between the agency’s Curiosity and Perseverance Mars rovers and their handlers on Earth — Mars Odyssey and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which launched in 2001 and 2005, respectively. The European Space Agency’s Mars Express and Trace Gas Orbiter spacecraft help out as well.

All four of these orbiters are gathering science data of their own, however. The MTN will not have a split focus; it will be a dedicated communications craft.

NASA got $700 million for a Mars telecom orbiter in July 2025, when Congress passed a budget reconciliation bill. The agency laid out requirements for the spacecraft in February of this year, then issued a request for proposals in May.

Blue Origin and Rocket Lab were viewed as the front-runners for the contract, and both pushed hard for it, touting their bona fides and expertise.

Blue Origin won out in the end, however. The company will base MTN on its Blue Ring spacecraft platform, which it describes as “an all-in-one, high-powered hybrid solar electric and chemical propelled spacecraft that provides unmatched mission maneuverability, versatility, and capacity at dramatically lower profile costs.”

Blue Ring has not flown a mission yet, but a prototype version of it went to space on the first-ever launch of Blue Origin’s powerful New Glenn rocket in January 2025. Though Blue Ring can fly on other rockets as well, MTN will presumably launch on a New Glenn; the newly announced NASA contract calls for Blue Origin to “design, develop, integrate, launch and operate” the Mars telecom mission.

The contract calls for Blue Origin to deliver the spacecraft to NASA no later than Dec. 31, 2028.

 

Supermassive black holes ‘too big’ for the early universe may not be so massive after all

In the four years that the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has been making observations of the early universe, it has been delivering one scientific milestone after another. However, the $10 billion telescope has also left astronomers with a massive problem  — literally.

The JWST has been routinely spotting supermassive black holes in the early universe that, at hundreds of millions of times the mass of the sun, are too big to have grown to such monstrous sizes before the universe was even 1 billion years old. These cosmic titans are also too massive in comparison to the masses of their small host galaxies, challenging what astronomers know about the relationships between supermassive black holes and their galactic homes that are usually observed in the modern universe.

Now, new research suggests this isn’t such a massive problem after all. The team behind this research thinks that it is all a matter of perspective, and that these early supermassive black holes aren’t as monstrous as scientists have estimated.

“We estimate masses of roughly one to ten million solar masses, compared with the tens or hundreds of millions previously inferred,” team leader Alessandro Trinca of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) Astronomical Observatory of Rome told Space.com. “These are still enormous objects, comparable to the four-million-solar-mass black hole at the center of the Milky Way, or a few times larger, but they lie at the lower end of the supermassive black hole population rather than among the most extreme examples.

“Importantly, these masses are much more consistent with the small galaxies that host them.”

The answer to this puzzle may lie in missing X-rays

While considering the mystery of “overmassive” black holes in the early universe, Trinca and colleagues picked up on another puzzle associated with these objects.

To reach such sizes, these black holes must be voraciously feeding on surrounding gas and dust. Such feeding black holes and the cosmic larders of gas and dust that surround them are usually extremely bright emitters of X-rays. But this doesn’t seem to be the case with the supermassive black holes in the early universe seen by the JWST. The team looked at 14 X-ray-silent supermassive black holes, finding that there is another way of considering this lack of emission.

“Almost none of them are detected in X-rays, even in very deep observations with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory,” Trinca said. “We interpreted this lack of X-rays as a clue rather than a problem. By incorporating it into our analysis, we find that these objects are likely much less massive than previously estimated. This brings their estimated masses into better agreement with the properties of their host galaxies.”

This led Trinca and the team to another conclusion: these early supermassive black holes may not be as massive as previously theorized, but they are feeding even more rapidly than was thought.

If feeding supermassive black holes blast out a lot of X-rays, then it might seem somewhat counterintuitive that ravenously feeding black holes could be X-ray “quiet.”

Trinca explains that this apparent contradiction is related to what happens when a black hole accretes matter at extremely high rates. The disk of gas around the black hole becomes geometrically thick, forming a donut-like structure with a narrow funnel along the rotation axis. The hot inner region that would normally produce strong X-rays becomes surrounded by this thick disk.

“As the X-rays escape, they are repeatedly scattered by the surrounding gas, losing energy before they can emerge. As a result, the black hole appears much fainter in X-rays than we would normally expect,” Trinca continued. “Therefore, the lack of X-rays is not unexpected in this scenario; it is actually a prediction of the model.

“In addition, this very high feeding might help explain how these black holes could already have grown to millions of times the sun’s mass when the universe was only a few hundred million years old.”

Out-eating Eddington

One of the reasons that supermassive black holes are so troubling in the early universe is the fact that they grow by consuming matter and through merging with other black holes. However, there exists a limit to how rapidly a black hole, or any astronomical body, can gather or “accrete” matter.

Called the “Eddington limit,” this exists because the more matter a body accretes, the more radiation it blasts out. So as the disk around a feeding black hole gathers enough mass to feed a rapidly growing black hole, it should emit so much radiation that it pushes away more matter, preventing it from being replenished.

Eventually this cuts off the food supply to the black hole and curtails its growth. However, this research suggests that supermassive black holes can enter brief phases of “super-Eddington” feeding.

“If these black holes are up to thirty times less massive than previously estimated, there is much less mass to build up within the available time, and their growth history becomes much less extreme,” Trinca said. “Instead of requiring continuous, uninterrupted growth over hundreds of millions of years, the picture becomes one of shorter episodes of very rapid accretion, which is exactly the kind of behavior we might expect in the gas-rich and dynamically active galaxies of the early universe.”

Confirming the team’s theory about bouts of extreme feeding for supermassive black holes will require astronomical evidence, which may be tough to obtain at least for now.

“The most direct test would be to study similar objects that are accreting very rapidly but are located at lower redshifts, where we can observe and characterize their environments in much greater detail. However, such objects are quite rare,” Trinca said. “For the more distant population observed with JWST, future missions providing deeper X-ray observations and improved spectra will be of crucial importance and might potentially detect the weak X-ray emission predicted by this scenario.”

The INAF researcher added that in the longer term, obtaining direct and independent measurements of black hole masses at progressively earlier cosmic times will provide the strongest test of the team’s theory. For now, the research is a striking example of what scientists can do when they don’t detect something, rather than when they make a positive detection.

“What was interesting was seeing how much information could be extracted from something we did not observe,” Trinca concluded. “A non-detection may appear to be the least informative type of observation, but in this case the absence of X-rays provided a strong constraint and helped define the physical picture more clearly than the detections alone.”

The team’s research was published in the June edition of the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket can generate some serious thrust, leading to incredible displays of fireworks as seen in the photo above.

What is it?

In this photo, the 27 Merlin engines of a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket spew fire as they generate the thrust that sent NASA’s revolutionary Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to orbit on a picture-perfect morning launch on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026.

Falcon Heavy sent Roman to a gravitationally stable parking spot known as Lagrange Point 2, located 1 million miles away (1.5 million kilometers) between Earth and Mars, where the gravitational pulls of the sun and Earth equal out.

Once there, the Roman Space Telescope will spend a few months coming online before it begins conducting groundbreaking science, searching the universe for signs of dark energy and dark matter and hunting for distant exoplanets.

Why is it incredible?

SpaceX only pulls out Falcon Heavy when it needs incredible heavy-lift capability. The rocket essentially consists of three Falcon 9 rocket boosters attached to one another, whose combined 27 Merlin engines can generate over 5 million pounds (2.27 million kilograms) of thrust. That lift power enables Falcon Heavy to send large payloads to distant destinations.

Aside from Roman, other notable Falcon Heavy missions include the 2024 launch of the Europa Clipper mission to Jupiter’s icy moon, the Psyche probe that will investigate a metal-rich asteroid in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, and most famously, a Tesla Roadster convertible featuring a mannequin ‘driver’.

Art for Everyone: How Public Libraries Expand Access

Introducing children to viewing, creating, and enjoying art at a young age helps them appreciate it throughout their lives. Some children are exposed to various forms of art because it is part of their daily life or because they have easy access to museums and galleries in their community. But in many areas across the country, access to museums and art galleries can be cost prohibitive. That is where the public library comes in!

While some museums, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., offer free admission, millions of people across the country do not have easy access to them. According to the 2024 Annual Survey of Museum-Goers from the American Alliance of Museums and Wilkening Consulting, museum admission costs vary widely, from a few dollars to $40–$50 per adult at some institutions. Among U.S. adults who visit museums at least occasionally, cost was the number one barrier to visiting more often. Among frequent museum-goers, younger adults were twice as likely as seniors to be concerned about admission costs.

In response to those barriers, and in an effort to enrich and inspire customers of all ages, many library systems have stepped up to provide access to art in a variety of forms.

Borrowing Art from the Library

Brooklyn Public Library in New York recently launched a lending program featuring art by local artists. Library cardholders can check out pieces of art for up to three weeks. The program is reminiscent of an art-lending program the library first experimented with in 1950.

The Braddock Carnegie Library in Pennsylvania began offering take-home access to contemporary artworks in 2023 as part of an artist project.

The Metro Arts Lending Library Collection at Nashville Public Library in Tennessee allows customers to borrow pieces of art for up to three months, with one renewal for an additional three months. The collection includes framed paintings, photographs, and mixed-media works created by local Nashville artists.

The partnership between Metro Arts and Nashville Public Library launched the collection in summer 2021 with the goals of expanding access to the arts for Nashville residents while providing direct support to local artists. Metro Arts’ stated vision is that “every Nashvillian should have access to a creative life,” and few places are more accessible than a city’s public libraries.

Opening the Doors to Museums

The Seattle Public Library in Washington has a museum pass program where library cardholders can get free admission to participating Seattle museums and other cultural attractions.

Customers can reserve one pass per calendar month, with new passes available every day after noon. Participating institutions include museums devoted to art, aviation, nature, science, and industry.

The Anne Arundel County Public Library in Maryland offers passes to the Museum of Historic Annapolis and historic venues such as the William Paca House and Garden, Hammond-Harwood House, and Historic London Town and Gardens. The museums and historic sites showcase interactive displays and artifacts from throughout history.

Without passes, admission costs can add up quickly for a family.

Many library users might not know which museums offer free admission and may assume that cost is a barrier. Libraries can encourage access by sharing information such as lists or guides to museums and other cultural institutions in their area. If free passes aren’t feasible, libraries could also explore partnerships that offer customers discounted admission.

Bringing Art into the Library

There are also other ways to appreciate art at the library. From displays of art created by students to exhibits by community members from the local senior center, art displayed around the library can be appreciated by everyone while also brightening up the facility. Community exhibits may also introduce new visitors to the library when artists invite friends, family, and others to see their work.

These exhibits can be achieved through local partnerships with schools, nonprofits, arts organizations, senior centers, and other community groups. Some public libraries have also exhibited art created by staff, which is an excellent way to highlight local talent.

Creating Art at the Library

Of course, homemade art by children and customers of all ages can also cultivate an appreciation for creativity and different art forms.

Anne Arundel County Public Library regularly runs process-art programs for preschoolers where children can use an assortment of materials to create artwork in their own style. The library also runs “All Abilities” art programs designed for customers with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Art programs can be provided for all ages at a reasonable cost and can give participants opportunities to explore new materials, find inspiration, develop their skills, and discover new interests.

Libraries don’t need an art-lending collection or a large museum-pass program to help make art more accessible. A display of work by local students or artists, a partnership with a school or nonprofit organization, a guide to free museum opportunities, discounted museum admission, or an inexpensive art-making program can all provide ways for customers to experience art.

Whether they are borrowing art, visiting a museum, viewing an exhibit at the library, or creating something themselves, library customers can find opportunities to explore and enjoy art. And public libraries can help make those opportunities available to everyone.
