Ernest Hemingway is almost as closely associated with certain places as he is with his books: Paris and its cafés, Key West and its cats, Cuba and its fishing boats. The American novelist and journalist spent much of his life abroad, writing books including A Farewell to Arms and The Old Man and the Sea before winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

With The Sun Also Rises turning 100 this week, we’re looking at the places he called home. His addresses ranged from a modest apartment in Paris, where he lived as a young writer with his first wife, Hadley Richardson, to a house outside Havana filled with thousands of books. Here’s where Hemingway lived, how he put together his homes, and what remains of them today.

Ernest Hemingway’s birthplace home.

Hemingway’s first address was decidedly more Victorian than the spare prose that would make him famous: He was born on July 21, 1899, in his maternal grandparents’ Queen Anne house at 339 North Oak Park Avenue in Oak Park, Illinois. Built in 1890, Ernest, his parents, his siblings, and his widowed grandfather all lived in the home. Today, the birthplace operates as a museum, restored to reflect the house the Hall and Hemingway families knew.

When Hemingway was six, the family moved to 600 North Kenilworth Avenue, a 1906 stucco house designed by architect Henry G. Fiddelke with close involvement from Hemingway’s mother, Grace. Its Prairie-style architecture offered a departure from the prior home’s Victorian silhouette. Hemingway lived here until he was 17.

Walloon Lake, Michigan

For the Hemingway family, summer meant Windemere, a cottage on northern Michigan’s Walloon Lake where Ernest spent much of his childhood vacationing. The original building measured just 20 by 40 feet, with a brick fireplace anchoring the living room and deep window seats that doubled as beds for the children.

Northern Michigan also became enduring literary material. The region supplied settings and experiences for stories including “The End of Something,” “The Three-Day Blow,” and “Big Two-Hearted River.”
