Officials on Wednesday morning gave the media an exclusive look at what is to come when the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens later this month.

The museum’s website describes it as one that “celebrates the power of visual storytelling.”

It was founded by George Lucas (the man behind the “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” franchises) and his wife, entrepreneur and former Starbucks chair Mellody Hobson. It will include everything “from Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait to Norman Rockwell’s scenes of everyday life to Charles White’s portraits of dignity,” museum officials said in a media release.

Situated on an 13-acre site in South Los Angeles’ Exposition Park neighborhood adjacent to the University of Southern California, the Lucas Museum will house more than 1,200 works of art across 100,000 square feet of gallery space.

“I’ve been doing this for 50 years now, and then it occurred to me that, what am I going to do with it all?” George Lucas said in an interview with The Art Newspaper last year. “I refuse to sell it. I’m not one of the typical high-art collectors who buys and then comes back five years later and says, ‘What happened to that painting you bought that was so beautiful?’ ‘Well, I sold it for $10 million. I made a lot of money on it.’ I could never do that. It’s not what I think art is.”

Tickets went on sale for this month’s opening earlier in the summer; however, interest was so high when tickets first dropped that some prospective buyers reported waiting more than four hours just to get to the webpage to purchase them.

Those living in the South Los Angeles area — more specifically the ZIP code 90037 — are being offered free annual passes to the museum. More than 65,000 people live in the 90037 ZIP code, which is bordered roughly by the 110 Freeway to the west, Slauson Avenue to the south, Central Avenue to the east, and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the north, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The “LM37” pass program launched in August and allows pass holders to reserve free tickets for themselves and one guest.

Additionally, children 17 and under get in free. For seniors ages 65 and older, admission is $21, while a standard adult ticket costs $25. It should be noted that the gardens and the park outside the museum, complete with a Jabba the Hutt statue, are publicly accessible, as is the library.

On Wednesday morning, KTLA’s Annie Rose Ramos explored the billion-dollar museum more than two weeks before it opens to the public. She described it as “so cool” on both the inside and outside.
