2001
Spontaneous memorials to those lost on Sept. 11 appear in Manhattan and across America. The New York Times publishes its “Portraits of Grief” series of tributes, and Legacy.com launches this memorial space to give people a place online to come together, mourn, and share sympathies.
2002
New York City first shines its “Tribute in Light” beams into the sky over lower Manhattan in honor of those who died at the World Trade Center.
2006
The Fire Department of New York dedicates its 9/11 Memorial Wall to the 343 firefighters who died in the line of duty.
2008
The two-acre Pentagon Memorial is dedicated in a ceremony attended by 20,000 people, including President George W. Bush.
2011
The Flight 93 National Memorial’s Memorial Plaza and Wall of Names are dedicated in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The National September 11 Memorial in New York City is dedicated.
2014
The 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City is dedicated in a ceremony led by President Barack Obama.
2018
The Flight 93 National Memorial’s 93-foot-tall Tower of Voices is dedicated, holding 40 wind chimes honoring those onboard the flight.
2022
The renovated and expanded NYC Police Memorial, which honors fallen officers including those who gave their lives on Sept. 11, reopens to the public.
2026
