Every summer, libraries look for creative ways to encourage children and families to keep reading. We spend months planning exciting performers, ordering prizes, and designing promotional materials. But last year, we decided to rethink one of the most familiar parts of Summer Reading: the reading log. Instead of creating a traditional reading tracker, we designed custom scratch-off cards that combined our Summer Reading promotion and reading log into one simple, engaging tool. One Card, Two Purposes Each spring, our local school librarians help us share information about Summer Reading before students leave for summer break. Rather than sending home a flyer and asking families to pick up a reading log later, we combined everything into a single card. The front of the card introduced our Summer Reading program with the scratcher, while the back included simple instructions for participating.
