From EveryLibrary:

The threats to libraries, librarians, and readers in 2025 included censorship, funding erosion, and unprecedented political interference. At the federal level, President Trump ordered the closure of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, fired the Librarian of Congress and the Archivist of the United States, and institutionalized censorship at Department of Defense K-12 schools and military academies. Across the States, Texas criminalized librarianship, Alabama instituted anti-LGBTQ collection rules, South Dakota nearly closed its state library, and the 5th Circuit said the First Amendment no longer applies in three states. Locally, school boards, library boards, and county commissions continued to censor books and discriminate against their own readers

The coming year will be decisive. With the approach of the nation’s 250th anniversary and impending Midterm Elections, the battles over culture, education, and free expression will intensify. EveryLibrary will remain on the front lines defending institutional independence, advancing new protections for readers, and expanding the movement that supports libraries. Our work in 2025 has positioned us to face these challenges in 2026 with confidence and clarity.
