At the end of October, I had the pleasure of attending the first Young People’s Book Festival hosted at Black Rock Middle School in Southeastern Pennsylvania. This free event was hosted by the middle school librarian, student ambassadors, and a local bookstore to highlight some amazing local authors and illustrators. Below are highlights from this year’s inaugural festival. Author Talks The festival hosted many prolific authors and illustrators for sessions about their writing, art, and more. Gene Barretta, Judy Schachner, and David Weisner discussed the process of creating award winning illustrations during “The Art of the Picture Book.” When sharing her personal process, Schachner candidly stated, “It’s not pretty.” Later in the day, I heard from author Hallee Adelman about her Big Feelings book series.
