“Our Nation Is In Crisis” – Cory Booker – Liza Donnelly – April 1, 2025

I love Cory Booker. He is amazing— I have always liked him for his honesty and his ability to show emotion and humanity in his actions as a Senator, and in his social media posts. Today, I am moved particularly by his passion. Senator Booker should be applauded many times over for his commitment to this act of resistance. It’s what is needed because things are not normal right now!

Booker is now in his 22nd hour of non-stop speaking on the Senate floor, his desire is to bring attention to the horrible actions of the Trump aministration. While not all speeches on the Senate floor in the history of our country were recorded, the longest known was a speech by Senator Strom Thurmond, who in 1957 delivered a 24-hour-18-minute filibuster opposing a piece of civil rights legislation. Booker will break that record in a few hours.

“My voice is adequate,” Mr. Booker said. “My efforts today are inadequate to stop what they’re trying to do. But we the people are powerful.”

Yesterday, Booker wrote:

“I rise with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able,” Mr. Booker said near the start of his speech on Monday. “I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our nation is in crisis.”

I think there should be a marathon of many Senators, following Senator Booker. Why not? The upcoming protests nationwide on April 5th are also symbolic, as Booker’s actions are on the Senate floor in the last 22 hours. Along with judicial action, we need symbolic action that will shine a bright light on this frightening time.

Booker is yelling in exasperation, pleading that we do something, saying that we are at a point of incredible danger of losing our democracy. I find it interesting to learn that neither Trump nor Musk are commenting on what he is doing. Why are they not making fun of him like they do so many people? I wonder why— are they afraid to acknowledge his bravery?
