Republicans’ budget puts Americans of all political stripes in crosshairs
Medicaid health care

Medicaid provides health care to 87 million Americans, many of whom are senior citizens, low-income children and people with disabilities. The 2025 Republican budget calls for the Energy and Commerce Committee to slash $880 billion from Medicaid by 2034, a move that would leave at least 30,000 Nevadans without coverage.

The numbers don’t lie. The latest Republican budget resolution proposes $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, with $2 trillion carved out of “mandatory spending” — a euphemism for gutting Medicaid, a lifeline for millions of Americans.

At the same time, President Donald Trump’s freeze on federal grant funding would unravel the fabric of the nation’s local health care facilities that Americans rely upon and devastate programs for low-income children, people with disabilities, the elderly, domestic and sexual violence survivors, and human trafficking victims.

The combined impact could see the closure of hundreds of local health care, nursing home, day care, head start, transitional housing, mental health, legal aid, support services and assisted-living facilities across the country. Facilities located in rural communities, which lack the ability to take advantage of economies of scale, are especially at risk, including those in rural Nevada that voted heavily for Trump.
