On Friday the 13th, the Central Library is hosting an exciting after-hours launch party from 6:30pm – 8:30pm for our new adult horror fiction collection, and we hope you join us! Register here.
Local authors Tara Campbell and Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann will treat us to an adult horror Story Time and lead us in a great conversation about the genre. We will also have crafts, special displays showing the breadth of horror in our collection beyond just adult fiction, have giveaways, and our FriendShop and checkout desks will remain open for your browsing and checkout pleasure. While not required, costumes are highly encouraged!
Below is a sneak preview of three of the hundreds of books that will be on display, along with links to some of our great horror coverage from the last couple of years.
Looking for a bite-sized taste of horror? Tiny Nightmares, an anthology edited by Lincoln Michel and Nadxieli Nieto, brings terror in small doses, 42 short stories under 1500 words. Divided into sections titled “Heads,” “Hearts,” “Limbs,” and “Viscera,” you might think you know what you’re in for- but the magic of horror is that there’s always an unexpected scare around the corner. Big names like Stephen Graham Jones and local authors like Meg Elison share the page with newer voices. Tara Campbell selected this as one of her favorite horror reads!
If The Little Mermaid is a little too saccharine for your taste, perhaps Jade Song’s Chlorine is up your alley. This mermaid tale is anything but sweet, the story of a child swimmer pushed so hard she becomes a monster. It’s a combo of literary coming-of-age and deeply dark body horror, a transformation sure to haunt your dreams. Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann selected this as one of her favorite horror reads!
Young adult horror is for everyone! In the aptly-named YA collection The White Guy Dies First (this would pair well with The Black Girl Survives in This One), Terry Benton-Walker pulls together 13 stories by authors of color in which– you guessed it!– the white guy dies first, subverting typical racial tropes in horror. The collection draws from young adult authors of various genres, with standout stories by Tiffany D. Jackson, Chloe Gong, and Lamar Giles. Local author and 2025 Summer Scares spokesperson Kendare Blake is also featured with “The Golden Dragon.”
All three of these picks will be on display during the event, available for checkout.
