To celebrate the start of the 2023 season, the Library is pleased to announce a new digital collection: Early Baseball Publications.

The collection, which will grow over time, provides full-text digitized access to more than 120 early baseball publications.

The initial release includes a large selection of 19th- and early 20th-century annual baseball guides, including many volumes of Spalding’s Official Base Ball Guide, one of the premier baseball publications of its day. Also included are rule books, record books, scorekeeping guides and books on how to hit and play different positions.

For serious baseball fans, the most beautiful words in the English language are “Pitchers and catchers report.”

(OK, maybe the second-most beautiful, after “The [insert your team] win the pennant!” as shrieked by a play-by-play announcer.)

With the arrival of spring training, which begins Feb. 15 this year, millions of fans make the pilgrimage to Florida and Arizona to spend sunny days at intimate Grapefruit League and Cactus League ballparks, sizing up established stars, hot prospects and their favorite team’s chances for the new season.

There are more good books written about baseball than any other American team sport—and that’s not just because baseball has been around the longest.

“This ain’t a football game,” manager Earl Weaver once said. “We do this every day.” Through baseball books, we’ve come to understand the game and its history.

The sport is catnip for writers: a game of contemplation and strategy that lends itself beautifully to numbers and analysis as well as poetry.

As longtime Washington Post writer Tom Boswell once wrote, “Conversation is the blood of baseball. It flows through the game, an invigorating system of anecdotes. Ballplayers are tale tellers who have polished their malarky and winnowed their wisdom… this passion for language and the telling detail is what makes baseball the writer’s game.”

It was Saturday night in downtown San Diego, and J Street near the Petco Park baseball stadium was bustling.

Fans of the hometown Padres, many decked out in team gear, packed the bars and restaurants with more waiting in line and happy to do so after a year of pandemic lockdown.
