Award-winning local author Kimberly Behre Kenna has designed a unique creative writing series for tweens at the East Lyme Public Library. In these workshops she shows how STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) concepts can be used to inspire story writing. Using an Euler’s Disk (a scientific toy that is spun like a coin to demonstrate physics concepts such as velocity, friction, and momentum), antique maps, reference books, and paint sample cards, the tween writers learn about pacing, plot, setting, character development, and conflict resolution. Kimberly Kenna explains that “the Euler’s Disk is a metaphor for both story, story structure, and for character development.” When we spin and launch the disk, the character is set in motion.
