This month, I decided to focus on yet another way to bring the science of reading into the library: understanding the types of words for emerging readers. (Last month I focused on blendable sounds.) Why? Because the “science of reading” has continued to be a popular topic. I came to teaching from another field. As a new teacher without a degree in education, I felt overwhelmed by all the types of words. There were “sight words,” “high-frequency words,” “Dolch words,” “Fry words,” and more. And I definitely couldn’t tell you why understanding the types of words for emerging readers matters. But now I can! Why does understanding the types of words for emerging readers matter?
