DOJ sees no basis for civil rights investigation following ICE shooting in Minneapolis, official says

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly not investigating the fatal shooting of Renee Good by a federal immigration officer as a civil rights case.

โ€œThere is currently no basis for a criminal civil rights investigation,โ€ Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche told CNN Tuesday. The Hill has reached out to the DOJ for comment.

Good, 37, was shot and killed last Wednesday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Officer Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis. The shooting sparked protests against the Trump administrationโ€™s widespread immigration crackdown.

The administration has defended Ross, arguing he acted in self-defense and Good obstructed federal law enforcement operations and weaponized her vehicle against officers in an act of โ€œdomestic terrorism.โ€

Federal investigators have also restricted local authoritiesโ€™ access to materials and evidence, over the objections of city and state officials. Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) Superintendent Drew Evans wrote last Thursday that his agency has โ€œreluctantly withdrawnโ€ from the investigation after the FBI informed it of the decision.
