When I walked into the ALSC Interest Meetup at #alaac25, I was greeted by smiling faces. These included ALSC President-Elect Dr. Claudette S. McLinn and Aryssa Damron, recipient of the 2025 Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship. Basically ALSC royalty.
As others trickled in, I witnessed Dr. McLinn and Damron greet every. single. person. that entered the room and include them in our conversation. Incoming ALSC Vice President-Elect Ariana Hussain also joined us and introduced herself to each and everyone present.
I’ve been an ALSC member (and blogger!) for about a year now. However, I’ve been a fly on the wall during that time. (Or a wallflower?) If you didn’t make it to #alaac25 or today’s meetup but—like me—want to get more involved in ALSC, don’t worry! Good notetaking skills are one of “the perks of being a wallflower.”

Step 1: Join ALSC
First: if you’re not (yet!) an ALSC member, you can join online. You can learn more about the benefits of ALSC membership via the online Member Center. (ALSC members can access any of the members only content linked below.)
Step 2: Get Involved
Dr. McLinn and Damron encouraged those who want to get involved in ALSC to do the following.
- Bookmark ALSC’s ALA Connect homepage.
- Complete the ALSC Member Interest Form.
- If you’re specifically interested in writing opportunities, visit the ALSC Publications & Resources Page, which includes contact information relevant to specific opportunities. These include the ALSC Blog and Children and Libraries: The Journal of ALSC, among others.
And that’s it!
How did or might you get involved in ALSC? Drop a line in the comments or at ktaksier@ufl.edu.
Kelley Taksier (they/them/theirs) is a former classroom teacher pursuing a Ph.D in special education at the University of Florida. Currently their research focuses on students’ access to texts in public schools. As a part of this work, they collaborate with school and public librarians. They are proud to be a part of Diverse BookFinder’s third Community of Practice cohort and enjoy reading science fiction outside of the reading they do as a part of their work. As for #alaac25, they are most looking forward to learning about how to be a better advocate for libraries.
