Some people love to make New Year’s resolutions. Others are firmly in the no-resolution camp. I’m more a One Word kind of person. Not really a resolution, more of an overall theme to the year. Choosing my word for the last few years has been an exercise in intention. This year, I got to thinking about what one word might be for libraries.
For 2025, my one word is: Cultivate. I hope to cultivate new experiences, skills, and relationships while also tending to existing friendships and things I love to do. To me, “cultivate” looks toward new growth and also looks back to what’s already good and growing. Using Canva, I created this image and have it posted in my work space.

This practice, along with (to be honest) the need to write this blog post, got me to thinking about what one word might be for libraries. I gathered a few mission statements from area libraries, input them into a free online word cloud generator, and created the following:

The large words are to be admired: community, welcoming, knowledge, growth. But what words are missing? What would you want your library to choose for its intention of 2025? What word would you choose for yourself for this year? The words we select can help us advocate for ourselves and for our communities. I’d love to have you share your thoughts in the comments below.
