We Love Magical Creatures!

Dragons and fairies and unicorns…oh, my! We could all use a little magic in our lives, so my colleague and I are looking forward to hosting a party celebrating magical creatures. Stories, crafts, and games will be sprinkled throughout the program. Patrons will be able to pick and choose which stations to attend after enjoying a short storytime about these fantasy creatures.

Stories

So many books to choose from! We will read two books and have a display of other titles. Here are a few possibilities:

  • Do Not Bring Your Dragon to the Library by Julie Gassman
  • Knight Owl by Christopher Denise
  • Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon by Kat Zhang
  • Unicorn Day by Diana Murray
  • Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great by Bob Shea

Crafts

A quick search of Pinterest yields enough craft ideas for many programs. We plan to create these adorable paper tube unicorns. Multicolored yarn makes the mane and tail, while gold glitter cardstock creates a perfect unicorn horn.

We will have a fairy wand station as well. Young patrons will use dowel rods, ribbons, beads, glitter cardstock stars, and other embellishments to create their wands.

Games

We are planning a few games to provide active options, rather than just crafts. Our Makerspace’s large format printer allows us to create posters for the Fairy and Dragon games.

  • Pin the Wing on the Fairy
  • Ring Toss on the Unicorn Horn
  • Feed the Dragon (toss a beanbag through the dragon’s mouth)

Other Ideas

We will decorate the space with Canva posters. Upon entering our program, young patrons will be able to discover their unicorn name as well as their dragon power.
