There’s a solid chance any time you turn on Food Network that you’re gonna see Guy Fieri and his spiky hair headed to Flavortown on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The show has filmed nearly 40 seasons, and that means visiting more than 1,250 restaurants around the country along the way (via dinersdriveinsandivelocations.com).

So it’s safe to say that Guy Fieri has seen — and tasted — it all. And you can taste it all too, if you’ve got a big appetite and you’re willing to do some traveling. But where to start?

A thousand restaurants is a lot to swallow, but what if you aim for, say, 50 of Fieri’s favorites? Well, Mashed has done all the work for you. Which states are the most educated? – USAFacts

Of the top 10 most educated states, nine are located on the east coast.

Over the past decade, Americans have become more educated. The rate of residents receiving a high school diploma or GED is on an upward trend.

In 2011, 28% of Americans had not graduated high school or received a GED – the same percentage that had received a bachelor’s degree or higher. As of 2021, 35% of Americans have at least a bachelor’s degree, compared with 26% of Americans without a high school diploma or GED.

Data from the US Census Bureau’s American Communities Survey collects information on maximum educational attainment by age group, location and gender. The data used here highlights the maximum educational attainment of the population 25 and older.

As the summer travel season kicks off, many of us look forward to exploring new places on trips away from home.

To help with this, NPR asked poets laureate, state librarians, bookstore owners and other literary luminaries from all 50 states — plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico — to recommend quintessential reads that illuminate where they live.

Here are more than 100 recommendations for you — whether you want to read about somewhere you’re heading, a place you hope to go someday, or somewhere you live and want to get to know better.

Nominated by Gailmarie Pahmeier, poet laureate of Nevada

How the Light Gets In: New and Collected Poems by Kirk Robertson: Andrei Codrescu has called the late poet Kirk Robertson “the djinn of the desert,” and Willy Vlautin wrote that Robertson’s poems are “dipped into the heart of the West, both what it used to be and what it is today.” I wholeheartedly agree; Robertson’s poetry made me see how our starkly beautiful desert is both brutal and tender. His work led me to make this place my home.

Sweet Promised Land by Robert Laxalt: First published in 1957, this book continues to inspire Nevada writers and those who visit our state. This book is a tender and moving account of the author’s Basque heritage and his love of our state. Before you enjoy a traditional meal at one of Nevada’s historic Basque restaurants, first read this. Its first sentence, in all its elegant simplicity, will have you hooked: “My father was a sheepherder, and his home was the hills.”

Literary Nevada: Writings from the Silver State edited by Cheryll Glotfelty: Published in 2008, Cheryll Glotfelty’s deeply researched anthology of Nevada literature remains the best source for an introduction to the literary arts in our state. If someone is planning a road trip through Nevada and the American West, this is the book to have. At every stop, there will be a voice to hear, a story told.

The setting of a book can play a massive role in its tone and memorability. The best authors can bring a place to life and make the story feel much more real because of it. That means that the choice of where to set a book is crucial.

Many authors simply set their books where they live, drawing on their day-to-day lives for inspiration. Others find locales that match the plot or feel of the story: noir set in California vs New York, for instance, account for two distinct subgenres.

So what are the states that draw in authors, and which ones are sorely lacking literary representation? You can place your guesses now (sheer population size is a good place to start), but Crossword Solver has done the work of tallying up all the U.S. location tags on Goodreads, so let’s dive into their results.
