The Seattle Public Library is currently managing major construction projects at the Fremont, West Seattle, and University branches, which are all historically landmarked, Carnegie-era buildings that have been in service for well over a century. These branches have been closed while work is underway.
Until recently, we anticipated that these three branches would reopen by the end of the year. Unfortunately, due to construction delays and complications related to the age and design of these three buildings, each project is taking longer than anticipated. To ensure we have time to complete these projects successfully and prepare these branches to resume service, we have revised their reopening timelines.
Our estimated reopening dates are now as follows, in chronological order:
- West Seattle Branch: By early January 2027
- University Branch: By the end of January 2027
- Fremont Branch: By the end of Q1 2027
Specific reopening dates and plans will be communicated here on our blog and emailed directly to patrons of each branch when they are determined.
We understand how important these branches are to the neighborhoods and communities they serve, and how eager patrons have been for them to reopen. Library staff also can’t wait to be back at their home branches helping patrons find what they need. We apologize for the inconvenience of these delays, and thank our patrons in advance for their patience and understanding.
We want to take moment to explain why these projects have been delayed and what’s expected over the next two to three months leading up to their reopening.
Fremont and West Seattle Branch Update
The Fremont and West Seattle branches temporarily closed in August 2026 for the installation of modern, electric HVAC systems as part of the Library’s Cooling Center Project.
We initially anticipated that these branches would reopen in November 2026, but some structural conditions in the building walls at both branches were uncovered late in the project, which required additional investigation, engineering analysis, and coordination to address.
As a result, original plans for expanding and running ductwork and venting had to be revised and structural improvements made to walls at both branches. This additional work was necessary to maintain the structural integrity of both branches, meet life-safety requirements. and preserve the operation of their mechanical and electrical systems.
University Branch Update
The University Branch temporarily closed in January 2025 for major renovations, including a seismic retrofit, HVAC installation, the expansion of modernization of publicly usable space, and significant interior and exterior accessibility improvements.
As noted in our last University Branch project update, a few unexpected complications have arisen over the course of the project that have delayed completion. The discovery and excavation of a large, buried boiler required remediation of the surrounding soil; a structurally compromised ceiling beam required a full, main-level ceiling replacement; and large, crumbled sections of original unreinforced masonry needed repairs and restoration.
New challenges have emerged over the last few weeks: Platform sections of the new, ADA-accessible pathways along the branch exterior have had to be repoured to pass inspection; and the fabrication of new branch skylights is taking longer than expected, preventing other critical work from moving forward.
Based on the current project schedule, we now anticipate that Library staff will be able to reoccupy the University Branch starting in November to prepare it for reopening, and that the branch will reopen near the end of January 2027.
