My name is Dr. Emily Aguiló-Pérez, and I am the proud chair of the 2027 Pura Belpré Award Committee. Our committee is now accepting suggestions for the 2027 Pura Belpré Award, and we would love to hear from ALSC and REFORMA members as we undertake this exciting work.
The Pura Belpré Award is presented annually to a Latino/Latina/Latine writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. The award honors the legacy of Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library, whose work as a librarian, storyteller, author, and puppeteer helped bring Puerto Rican stories and culture to generations of children.
If you have an eligible book that you believe the committee should consider for the 2027 Pura Belpré Award, please consider submitting a suggestion. We welcome suggestions that will help ensure the committee is aware of the breadth of outstanding work published during the award year. The deadline to submit suggestions is October 15th, 2026
