Two soundproof booths next to each other in a library
These soundproof booths on the first floor of Perkins Library have proven so popular with Duke students that we’ve added another one on the third floor, plus six additional reservable carrels on Perkins 4.

We heard you loud and clear in our 2026 Libraries Student Satisfaction Survey: Duke students want more quiet individual study spaces. So we’re making it happen.

Perkins Library now has 7 new solo study spaces available for students, bringing our total number of solo study spaces to 14. These spaces are 1-person rooms, ideal for virtual interviews, online classes, and getting focused work done without interruptions or distractions.

Where can I find the solo study spaces?

All of the solo study spaces are located in Perkins Library, floors 1-4:

Perkins Floor 1
  • Soundproof Booths 1-2 (located near Perkins Room 118)
  • Perkins Interview Room 130 (picture below, includes a telephone with dedicated landline)

Perkins Floor 2
  • Perkins Carrels 221-224
Perkins Floor 3
  • Soundproof Booth 3 (visible from Duke Life Room and drinking fountain)
Perkins Floor 4
  • Perkins Carrels 420A-420F (centermost carrel suite on the floor)

How can I reserve one?

All of these solo spaces are kept unlocked and can be booked for up to 90 minutes per day online from the Libraries Find Library Spaces webpage or can be used on a drop-in basis if unbooked.
