This morning, the room was packed for the “Creating Inclusive Collections for Patrons with Disabilities” session at #PLA2026. Library Consultant, Author, and founder of “Libraries for All” Courtney Walker highlighted her partnership with Plano Public Library System in Texas through this interactive session. As a former school librarian, Courtney shared how she became interested in creating what she names “Adapted Books” while working with students in special education classes. She wanted a way for these students to engage with books and love reading, but her usual books and stories were not cutting it.  After working in a special education classroom at her school, Courtney modeled what she saw the teachers doing: creating adapted books. These books are laminated and rebound books that have sensory elements on each page to create an engaging and tactile reading experience for all readers.
