Musical medleys, self-acceptance and the voice of Moana. Apple TV+’s recent movie musical book adaption, Lulu is a Rhinoceros, offers not only a chance for young viewers to dance and sing along to upbeat pop songs, but also to think about what it means to choose kindness even when things are not going your way. I had the chance to interview the creators behind Lulu is a Rhinoceros, which started as a picture book about Lulu, who appears to be a bulldog but knows that she is truly a rhinoceros. Jason and Allison Flom are the father-daughter team behind the book and also served as producers and creators on the musical special. They offered insight into their process as a writing team and what they hope viewers take away from the book and its adaptation, which I was then able to put to the test with my own kindergarten classes….
