The 2026 Mildred L. Batchelder Award Committee is asking ALSC membership to submit titles for committee consideration. The Batchelder Award is presented annually to an American publisher for a children’s book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originating in a country other than the United States and in a language other than English, published during the preceding year. The intent of the Batchelder Award is described as “to recognize U.S. publishers for purchasing non-English texts that originate in another country, and translating the text into English for a U.S. audience.” (p. 82 of Batchelder Award Manual) Specifically, the award encompasses traditionally translated books, considered those that are originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States and subsequently published in English in the United States, as well as non-traditionally translated books.
