Judy Zuckerman is the 2025 recipient of the Association for Library Service to Children’s (ALSC) Distinguished Service Award. This prestigious award honors an individual who has made significant contributions to library service to children and to ALSC.
Zuckerman is Director of Youth and Family Services at the Brooklyn Public Library in New York. With a career that spans over 4 decades, she is a children’s librarian manager, family literacy expert, and mentor to current and future librarians.
She has been an actively involved member of ALSC since graduate school, serving ALSC on an organizational level as a member of the ALSC Board as well as on many process and awards committees, including Newbery, Caldecott, and Geisel. Zuckerman was chair of the 2011 Caldecott Committee and is often called on for advice and expertise by ALSC leaders.
Zuckerman has extended her expertise in children’s literature and illustration through her dedication to New York area programs such as a partnership with the Ezra Jack Keats’ Foundation’s Bookmaking awards, hosting the Society of Illustrators Original Art Exhibit, twice serving as a judge for the New York Times’s Ten Best Illustrated Books, and implementing a gorgeous mural in the Children’s Room at the Brooklyn Central Library featuring original illustrations by award-winning, Brooklyn-based illustrators. A native New Yorker, she authored an essay in the 50th Anniversary Edition of Harriet the Spy and also a children’s literature walking tour of NYC.
Multiple letters of recommendation for this award highlighted Zuckerman’s role as a mentor for librarians. One librarian wrote, “I am one of many children’s librarians who have benefited from her mentorship and guidance. Judy’s deep understanding of children’s lives and her awareness of how they engage with the library’s collections and programs is truly commendable.”

Gwen Vanderhage is a collection development librarian for children and teens at Brodart, Co. Formerly a children’s librarian at Denver Public Library, Gwen now resides in the Pacific Northwest. She is an active member of ALSC, most recently serving as Chair of the 2024 Geisel Award Committee and is currently Co-Chair of the Professional Recognition and Scholarships Committee and Co-Convenor of the Children’s Collection Management Discussion Group.
