Spring Programming Ideas

Spring is here! Chances are, you have your programming already planned for the season, but if you want to go ahead and plan for next year (or maybe you are behind on planning and need ideas for now!), I’ve rounded up some springtime fun for you:

Ideas that take more planning

• Partner with a local community garden for a Storywalk. Involve student/advisory groups to decorate stepping stones or rocks for a rock garden.
• Reach out to your local Girl Scout Council. They have badges they can earn related to gardening, recycling, and more. The library is a natural partner for many of these badges.
• If you do not already have a Seed Library, now is the time to start!
• “Spring Cleaning” for students. Host workshops that will help them in cleaning out bookbags, lockers, and other spaces that can be very messy by this time of year.

Ideas that take less planning

• Earth Day is April 22. There are so many fun, easy things you can do to celebrate – have a passive program area with soil, cups, and seeds for patrons/students to plant and take home; create a display of books that are green;or fill a jar with pebbles, sunflower seeds, or other items from outside and ask students to guess how many are in the jar.
• Most likely, you already have a story time planned that is themed for this time of year. Instead of hosting your story time inside – go outside!
• Put together a Scavenger Hunt – my local library prints out images of book covers and sticks them all over the library. They have a checklist that goes with it, and when you have found all the images, you get a small prize. So easy – this month, include facts that help to save the Earth! Try an online scavenger hunt too – like this one.
• And, of course, a bookmark station! This month, you can use recycled materials for students to use to create bookmarks – cardboard boxes, last month’s flyers, discarded graphic novels, etc.
