Did you know that ALSC first launched a digital version of its journal, Children and Libraries (CAL), in 2014 on Metapress? The addition of an electronic format was precipitated by the results of a 2011-12 communications survey indicating that ALSC members overwhelming preferred a quarterly (versus 3 issues per year) journal, published digitally as well as in print. CAL moved to Open Journal Systems (OJS), its current home, one year later in 2015.
By now you may have heard that CAL is moving to a fully digital format. ALSC surveyed members again in 2024 to gather feedback about CAL. When asked about a potential reduction of print issues, almost 47% of respondents reported they were fine with all issues being in digital format. Survey respondents identified fiscal responsibility, environmental sustainability, an interactive reading experience, and a more visually appealing product as positive benefits of a digital journal.
We know many readers value print format, but we hope that the advantages of the digital platform will win CAL readers over.

Farewell Print, Hello Future!
The final print issue of CAL was Winter 2024. Look for the first all-digital, Spring issue next month. We welcome your feedback and any questions you may have. Please contact us at alsc@ala.org.
CAL is turning 22, and we’re committed to its continued success and adaptability. We extend our sincere gratitude to our loyal readers. Your suggestions and opinions help us to advance the journal and ultimately to better support the community serving youth in libraries.
Happy Reading!
