Attending a library conference offers the privilege of connecting beyond the walls of our libraries, and the 2025 LibLearnX in Phoenix, Arizona was no exception. In addition to attending the packed-audience, exciting announcement of the Youth Media Award winners, there were dynamic presentations and lots of innovative ideas to take home. From reimagining green spaces and wellness to inviting playfulness in library work, the conference truly delivered something for every library worker.

Each day at LibLearnX was packed with professional development options and multiple learning formats. Kudos to the conference planners, because at times there were more high interest options available than I was able to accomplish. At a multi-day conference that’s a great problem to have.

Top highlights of my LibLearn Xtras (if I had to pick) would be conversations about intellectual freedom and inclusion, both formal and informal. Addressed from the ground up, speakers included everything from brick and mortar building design to programming ideas and book selection tips highlighting connections and empathy. As libraries continue to face challenges, hearing from colleagues about strategies to respond is invaluable, and our ability to talk across library borders provided much needed fuel. A key take away for me emphasized the importance of staying connected with the warm and welcoming library world fostered by the ALA community.

Some of my favorite LibLearn Xtras involved conversations with peers, round table get togethers, area library visits, and so many intangibles. Conference days feel a little bit like living in accelerated time (like dog years), where there’s just so much packed into each day that it counts for two. I returned with additions to my always-growing TBR pile, a little tired but rejuvenated and ready to Library On!
