On Saturday, Feb. 8, Library patrons turned out in force on a bright, brisk Seattle morning to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Greenwood Branch

The original Greenwood Branch opened in 1928 and operated out of a small, rented storefront at N. 70th St. and Greenwood Ave. N. In 1954, a new branch was built at N. 80th St. and Greenwood Ave. N. to meet decades of public demand for more space and more books. After 50 years of wear and tear, that building was torn down to make way for the current Greenwood Branch, which opened on January 29, 2005 with twice the space, updated technology, and modern amenities.
It was clear during Saturday’s celebration how much the branch means to its patrons, who dropped in throughout the day to browse, chat with staff, and join the fun. Patrons mentioned the branch being a community hub and gathering place, an educational resource and study spot for local students, and, for many regular patrons, a home away from home. Its circulation numbers also tell a story: More materials are checked out from the Greenwood Branch than any other location except the Central Library.
“It’s delightful to see so many familiar faces,” said Regional Manager Dawn Rutherford, “and for staff and patrons to have a day where they can show their appreciation for each other and love for the branch. Also, there’s cake.”

Chief Librarian Tom Fay missed the afternoon cake, but he was happy to talk with patrons all morning. “Seattle loves its libraries, and patrons take pride and ownership in their neighborhood branch,” he said. “I’m incredibly grateful for that support, which makes it possible for the Library to get big things done – like we did with the Greenwood Branch 20 years ago.”
The day kicked off with a Disney’s Frozen singalong followed by a special story time featuring books about literacy and libraries. With one of the most extensive children’s sections in The Seattle Public Library system, the Greenwood Branch is always a hit with younger patrons.

The festivities honored the branch’s partnerships with local businesses. The singalong was led by musicians from Illumination Learning Studio, an arts education organization just a few blocks away. During the raffle later on in the day, patrons won gift cards to Couth Buzzard and Phinney Books, two beloved independent bookstores in the neighborhood.
“Greenwood Branch staff care about establishing strong connections with the community, and they look for chances to partner with nearby schools, businesses, and neighborhood groups,” noted Hung Pham, longtime Greenwood Branch manager. “Our neighborhood connections help us serve more people and they make our programs and services more relevant and enriching for our patrons.”
