I’m still a huge fan of middle grade fiction and love finding new titles to enjoy, even as an adult. Here are some that I recommend for the new year!
A Whale of the Wild by Rosanne Parry
Vega, an orca whale living in the Salish Sea, knows that someday she will take on the responsibility of becoming her family’s next matriarch. While learning to find salmon to feed her hungry family, an earthquake and tsunami separates her and her brother from their pod. Can Vega find her way back to her family? And can they all find ways to navigate the increasing dangers and challenges in the sea?
Not Quite a Ghost by Anne Ursu

Violet’s life is changing. Not only has her family moved into a creaky old house, but the shifting dynamics between her friends since they all started middle school is unsettling. Then, while struggling with an ongoing mysterious illness, Violet starts seeing shadows in the old yellow wallpaper in her attic bedroom.
Mexikid by Pedro Martin
In this funny and heartwarming graphic memoir, Pedro doesn’t know how to feel when he is told that his family will be going on a road trip from California to Mexico to pick up his abuelito. But after spending time with his grandfather, Pedro starts to learn more about his family and his Mexican identity.

Olivetti by Allie Millington
