Meet ALSC’s newest staffperson: Gavin Damore

In an effort to learn a little bit about Gavin Damore, ALSC’s Membership and Marketing Specialist and the newest addition to the ALSC team, I offered a variety of questions. Gavin was brave enough to answer them.

• What brought you to ALSC?

  I recently re-relocated to Chicago (lived here pre-pandemic) from the Boston area, where I’m originally from, so was looking for a new position. I had actually been looking to move back into the library world for awhile, since I worked in my college’s library all throughout college and really enjoyed it. My background is in nonprofit marketing, so when I saw a membership and marketing role with ALSC, I knew I had to apply!

• As the new ALSC Membership and Marketing Specialist, what aspect of your position are you most excited about?
  I am most excited to interact with ALSC’s membership! I have always loved working at organizations with large volunteer/member bases both to get to know people and to find out about their ideas for the organization.
• Do you have any pets?
  I have a 12-year-old tuxedo cat named Mycroft!
• Vegetarian, Carnivore, or Omnivore?
  I tend to eat vegetarian when I’m cooking for myself, but still an omnivore.
• Do you prefer being the driver or the passenger?
  I prefer being the passenger – while I have my license, I haven’t owned a car since 2017 and much prefer to take public transportation when I can.
• What was your favorite thing to play with when you were a child?
  I got a Gameboy Color when I was 7, and absolutely loved playing games on it, especially Pokemon Gold.
• What type of books do you like to read?
  I read a lot of nonfiction about social issues and the histories of different subcultures and social movements. I also like collecting and reading zines!
• Any piercings or tattoos?
  I am currently doing research to get my first tattoo! Probably of the Schoolmaster from Pink Floyd’s The Wall, which is one of my favorite albums.
• Are you most comfortable in your kitchen or in your living room?
  My living room! While I do cook for myself most of the time, it’s usually simple meals and it’s not really my favorite activity.
• What is the best compliment you ever received?
  An elementary school classmate once told me I was a good listener, and that has always stuck with me!
