It’s January! We all know what that means—time for ALA’s Youth Media Awards (YMAs) press conference. This year’s event takes place on Monday, January 27, at 8 a.m. (MT), during the LibLearnX conference in Phoenix. Maybe I’m biased but I think the awards make the generally cold, dark, and dismal days of this month way more exciting. The light at the end of the January tunnel!
The YMAs are recognized worldwide and greatly anticipated by youth services library workers, publishers, book creators, teachers, and children’s and young adult literature and media fans of all ages. They are BIG!
By the Numbers
How big, you might ask. Just for fun, here are some interesting statistics related to the 2024 Youth Media Awards and press conference.
43 – Medal/Winning books chosen
89 – Honor Books named
8 – Organizations bestowing awards (e.g., ALA, and its divisions, affiliates, and round tables)
193 – Hard-working award committee chairs and members discussing and selecting titles
204 – Slides in the press conference presentation
23,394 – Views of the Unikron production (including live views and additional views within 24 hours after the event)
55 – Mock election results recorded on the ALSC Blog
Traffic Spike Ahead!
In addition, the number of views of the ALA website (including all pages) on January 22, 2024, was more than 96,000! For comparison, the total website views on the previous day, a Sunday, were just over 29,500.
