- Building Community Through Storytelling at #PLA2026This morning, I heard from a cohort of librarians from Missouri about the annual storytelling festivals that are hosted across the state. Throughout these festivals, a diverse array of storytellers, stories, and workshops make their way into the community for Missouri residents to enjoy. During this session, two different library systems highlighted the individual festivals that their systems host – the Missouri River Regional Library (MRRL) and the St. Louis County Library (SLCL). The presenters introduced what the storytelling festivals look like in each of their library systems – one larger, urban system and one smaller, rural system. While I expected them to discuss possibly a one-day festival hosted at their library, what I actually heard was a much more inclusive and unique outreach program. Each system intentionally sends storytellers out into the community, to community centers, schools, detention facilities, and more over a period of two to seven days…. - Make Your Library Fat InclusiveThe program I was most excited to attend at #PLA2026 was “Every Story Matters, Every Body Belongs,” presented by Amelia Mason. She did a fabulous job sharing information about how libraries can work to become inclusive spaces for all bodies. I discovered the body positivity/fat acceptance movement several years ago and it completely changed my life as a fat person (for the better!). As we work to make libraries inclusive in so many other ways, we need to remember to consider fat bodies as well when creating our programs, collections, and spaces. Amelia started with a framework of weight science (intentional weight loss doesn’t work, being fat doesn’t mean that someone is unhealthy, etc.) and the history of anti-fat bias in medicine and effects of this bias. Then she dove into what to consider when striving to make libraries more fat inclusive, including the width, arms, and weight capacity of… The post Make Your Library Fat Inclusive appeared first on ALSC Blog.
