New Flickr Album: A Corn-ucopia of Pictures | Picture This: Library of Congress Prints & Photos

The selection of pictures shared in our latest album posted on the photosharing site, Flickr, made me reflect not only on the strong associations in my own past between summer and corn on the cob, but also how fertile corn’s visual potential is.

In fact, corn has traditionally been a symbol of life and fertility, particularly among the native peoples of the Americas, so I was delighted to see how artists and designers realized corn’s ripe possibilities in a variety of contexts.

Possibly my favorite is this musically inclined fellow composed of corn cob, leaves, and tassels (a composition that simultaneously demonstrates the rich linguistic play the word corn offers–I didn’t appreciate until I read the description that he is playing the cornet!):

Whether you’ve read one of his novels or have simply heard something described as “Hemingway-esque,” chances are you’re familiar with the direct prose the influential author adopted in the 1920s.

It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that Hemingway’s personal life is just as interesting as what lives on his pages. Now, more than 50 years after his death, take a look back at rare photographs of the American writer’s life.

Google Photos’ much improved video editor arrives on Android – The Verge

Android’s Google Photos app is being updated with the improved video editing tools that were previously exclusive to iOS. Android Police spotted the rollout, and reports that it appears to be available for both Google Pixel devices and other Android phones. The tools appear to have arrived with a server-side update, though you can try updating to the latest version of Google Photos if they’re not yet live in your app.

As Google explained back in February, the new video editing tools include over 30 controls, covering everything from cropping, filters, and color grading options like adjusting contrast, saturation, and brightness.

In AI-generated animations, faces that were once frozen in time blink, turn their heads and even smile.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can now transform photos of people into short, highly realistic animations, much like the moving pictures in the newspapers and posters of Harry Potter’s magical world.

In these AI-animated clips, faces that were once frozen in time blink, turn their heads and even smile, their movements wavering between astonishingly lifelike and deeply unsettling (and yes, downright creepy).
