It was a vacation I had been dreaming about for years: the classic California road trip up the historic State Route 1 with my husband and our 5-year-old daughter, Frankie, and 3-year-old son, Finn. It was a trip that was meant to show them the sheer magnitude of Big Sur, the jagged artistry of the coastline, the endless blue of the Pacific, the raw, wild beauty of God’s country.
